Trust vs. Expectations
Something I’ve been thinking about for years, that I’ve talked to people about a number of times: what is the boundary between healthy trust and unhealthy expectations? Too often in the past, I feel like I’ve set myself up for some sort of fall, but just tried to brush it aside as a price that comes with trust - it just comes with the territory. Or does it? The majority of the...

Juda-as →
We often think of Judas as completely evil and horrible through and through, seeking to take Jesus down from the beginning. But he wasn’t like that. This devotional is a pretty interesting look at the concept of receiving rather than working for God’s grace.

That's Not In the Bible →
An interesting read on how a lot of commonly quoted “Biblical” passages aren’t passages at all or have been misinterpreted. All the more reason why we shouldn’t just blindly throw verses at things out of context, but rather take the time to understand the whole message…and remember it.

Mango Jelly: So you want a king? →
This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground…  There’s definitely truth in the fact that it’s not all fun and games. But at the...

Ragamuffins
Just finished The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning - definitely one of the best reminders about grace that I’ve encountered outside the Bible. I highly recommend this for anyone, whether the concept of grace has you completely baffled or you miraculously feel like you understand grace fully. He had an interesting note in the last section of the book called “19 Mercies: A Spiritual...

The Brothers Karamazov
This was perhaps one of the greatest books I have ever read. Even as a work of fiction, it has an immense amount of truth in it. Dostoyevsky does such a phenomenal job of capturing the depth of human emotion and articulating the the muddled thoughts that make up the human psyche. Reading this book, I felt genuine disgust at Fyodor Pavlovitch’s unbridled licentiousness, affection for Father...

fresh perspectives
My friend shared with me recently a new way of looking at sin: … In Christ, I am a new creation. My old self has passed away and the new self HAS COME. This means that the sinful nature is no longer part of who I am, but is instead a separate entity that still lives inside of me and tries to influence me, but isn’t actually part of who I really am anymore. If you don’t believe...
